Medical First Responder Course
The medical first responder (MFR) course offered at the Western Institute of Emergency Education will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to improve your chances of saving lives, reducing pain, and minimizing injuries before patients arrive to hospital. This is necessary for anyone working in traumatic and medical emergency situations.
Who Should Take the Medical First Responder Course?
If you are seeking entry into a Primary Care Paramedic program, the medical first responder course should be your first step. In fact, any emergency health care worker looking to become an advanced medical first responder will benefit from taking this course. This includes paramedics, law enforcement, firefighters, industrial workplace responders, and other emergency services personnel in Canada. You should also take this training if you want to become a senior workplace first aid attendant. To apply, you will need to already have the standard first aid CPR AED Level C certification.
What the Medical First Responder Certification Covers
You will spend a total of 80 hours in class receiving medical training and hands-on practice. You will learn how to diagnose the condition of a patient and determine the severity of the patient’s injuries. You will then practice providing the appropriate emergency medical care for a variety of situations. Finally, you will receive instruction in moving, lifting, and positioning patients to keep them safe, prevent subsequent injuries, and reduce pain or discomfort.
In addition to medical first responder training, the course includes 16 hours with an international trauma life support (ITLS) provider and eight hours of psychological first aid.
Participants who successfully complete our medical first responder course will receive the following certifications:
- MFR Certification from WIEE
- ITLS Provider Basic Certification
- Psychological First Aid
- AFA Certification (Red Cross)
