Neonatal Resuscitation Program Canada 8th Edition
The neonatal resuscitation program (NRP) provides you with an introduction to the skills you need to resuscitate newborn infants. The training is offered through textbook instruction, tests, simulations, and hands-on practice through a combination of private study and a skills session. This ensures that you gain all the practical training you need and are also clear about the concepts and science behind neonatal resuscitation.
The Neonatal Resuscitation Program in Canada
In Canada, the NRP is delivered by the Canadian Paediatric Society. At the Western Institute of Emergency Education, we offer the program in English and French.
The course is split into two parts. The first is self study using the most recent version of the Textbook of Neonatal Resuscitation. The second part is an in-person course. You will need to successfully complete an online exam that tests your knowledge of the concepts in the textbook before the day of the course.
The practical course is led by a qualified instructor. In addition to hands-on training, you will receive a debriefing to discuss ways in which you could improve your communication, team work, and leadership skills. This part of the program, however, recaps almost none of the material from the textbook, which is why it is critical that you have already studied this content and passed the exam.
Who Should Take the Neonatal Resuscitation Program?
All medical professionals handling newborns should take this course, whether they are working alone or in a team, in a delivery room or a nursery. This includes nurses, physicians, respiratory therapists, and anyone else who needs to know neonatal resuscitation.
What You Will Learn
Everything you learn in the neonatal resuscitation program comes from evidence-based science. After covering the basic principles of resuscitation, you will learn how to apply the first steps of resuscitation, which includes how to use devices for positive-pressure ventilation. You will also learn how to apply chest compressions on infants and how to perform tracheal intubation. The program also covers medication and special cases and considerations, such as resuscitation of babies born pre-term. Finally, you will look at ethics and end of life care.
By the end of the program, you will:
- Know how to carry out neonatal resuscitation
- Be able to demonstrate all the necessary skills for resuscitating newborn infants
- Be able to explain the NRP Resuscitation Algorithm
Upon successfully completing both parts of the program, you will receive an eCard and provider status. This is valid for two years. Use your card and provider status to demonstrate your proficiency in neonatal resuscitation.Remember to sign up to retake the course as soon as your card expires (if not before) to keep your skills and knowledge up to date.
